  History of
Woodbridge United Methodist Church

This site has been in continuous use as a place of worship since 1707, first by the quakers and since 1832 by the Methodists.
The original wooden church building stood on this site, but was moved to the present location of the old parsonage, next door, where it remained in use until it burned down in 1876.  The cornerstone of the new brick church was laid in 1870 where the present church stands.  In 1951, that building served as an emergency center where a Pennsylvania Railroad train derailed one block east of here, killing 86 people.  It remains the fourth worst disaster in U.S. History.
Sadly, in 1954, the brick church was destroyed in a fire.  The large stained glass window at the back of the sanctuary survived and is one of the few parts of the original church that remains.  Incredibly, two years later, almost to the day, the first services were held in the present structure.
To date we continue to serve the community in the Wesley tradition:
The Methodist branch of protestant religion traces its roots back to 1739 where it developed in England as a result of the teachings of John Wesley.  Wesley's three basic precepts that began the Methodist tradition consisted of:
1.  Shun evil and avoid partaking in wicked deeds at all costs,
  2.  Perform kind acts as much as possible, and
  3.  abide by the edicts of God the Almighty Father
"For as in one body we have many members, and all the members do not have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.
                                                                        (Romans 12:4-5)
